Silence. At the crucifixion, it was the unlikeliest of witnesses. Jesus’ consistency in His silence is a teaching moment for our lives. One of the things that we find as we trace through the timeline of the crucifixion is that Jesus is brought before person after person, official after official, magistrate after magistrate, and each time, no matter the audience, no matter the title, no matter the politics at play, the answer was the same. Whether it was the king or the priests. The masses or the governor. The Romans or the Jews. The religious or the secular. The educated or the common person. No matter the audience, the answer remained the same.

I’m all about action. I’m all about jumping in and making things happen. But sometimes the greatest witness isn’t to be dynamic; it’s to be static, consistent. Sometimes it’s more powerful to stand still. Sometimes it’s more powerful to stand silent. Sometimes the silent witness can have the greatest impact.

After all, Jesus’ silence shook the ground, took out the sun, raised the dead, and saved a pagan.

Anyone can lash out. Anyone can react to circumstances. Anyone can have a flare up. But it takes a spine to turn the other cheek. Standing stable in the face of opposition…that takes strength.
