This is a 3 part series entitled “What Child is This?” that covers the Christmas Story from the perspective of the shepherds, Magi and Mary. Enjoy this unique twist on the usual telling of the Christmas story and ask yourself, “What Child is This”?
Week 1: Shepherds – The Bible is full of stories and references of shepherds but why does God use this simple minded occupation so often for examples? In this lesson, we will cover the topics of what a shepherd really is, look at other examples of good shepherds and of course, cover the story of Jesus Christ being born from the perspective of the shepherds.
Week 2: Magi – While there are a lot of misconceptions about who and what the magi were, mentioned in the Christmas story, one thing is certain: these men traveled for years to see the new king and when they found them, they knew it was worth it. In this lesson, we will cover the topics of who they really were,m the importance of the gifts they gave Jesus and their importance to the Christmas story.
Week 3: Mary – The story of the shepherds and magi are important to the story of Christmas, but without Mary, the story would not be near as important. In this lesson, we will cover the topic of how Mary prepared for the baby Jesus and her reactions to the shepherds and the magi.
This series uses the “5 i’s” format, created by 7 Minute Fix. Introduce (introduce the subject for the lesson), include (include the students by asking yes or no questions so that they are more comfortable with discussion), invest (invest in the students by teaching the lesson), involve (involve the students by asking questions to prompt discussion), and invoke (invoke and challenge the students). We hope that you find this method of teaching to be challenging and successful for your student ministry.
